business operations + Strategy
From inception to sale and every business decision in between, a plethora of options await. I will counsel you through the options, create a plan, and help you execute the plan we create just for you. With every project I undertake, I understand you want a simple, straight-forward answer and I, the left-brain lawyer that I am, want to provide all the details for every possible scenario. Thus, you can count on my presenting your options and our plan in a clear-concise manner with an extended answer. This format -- Question + Short Answer + Long Answer -- ensures that I meet my legal requirements of providing all the facts and also allows for easy review later when you read a short paragraph that sums up the research.
The small business world is ever growing and evolving, and we’re not just talking about retail trends. With the consistent development of new technologies and new revenue streams, the opportunity for profit grows, but so does the complexity of business and tax laws that govern your product sales. That’s where we come in.
This is for my fellow lawyers. I'm looking at you, family law attorneys who need a seasoned tax lawyer to explain how the numbers flow on a tax return. Think about your self-employed client who is going through a divorce; the tax return shows six-figures of income but the client says it's not in a bank account. I will explain via written report how that is possible. I am also available for court appearances when testimony is be necessary to get the facts into the record.
tax planning + preparation
Taxes are a thorn in the side of most people. My tax work is focused on educating clients on the ins and outs of tax law. Income taxes for business and personal, understanding the difference between deductions and credits, knowing which tax credits are available, as well as ensuring your support for all tax positions are tightly documented in case of future audit. I educate clients about employment taxes (e.g., income tax withholdings, unemployment insurance, social security and medicare, etc.), state level taxes (Washington B&O, Portland / Multnomah County Income Tax, sales tax, how to account for sales in multiple states), and finally I can assist clients with audit support and hearings before the Oregon Tax Court.
I am also available to help you prepare your personal income tax return, including all applicable schedules and claiming all deductions and credits.
It happens; people die. Sometimes it is expected, other times it is not. It is always emotional. Let us assist your navigation of wrapping up your loved one's estate, as we work with compassion and grace. We assist with all estates: those that have plans in place (read: will) as well as those without any documents to guide the family in the decedent's last wishes.
Not only for the super rich, estate plans are more than wealth passing from one generation to the next. A robust estate plan will handle asset disposition through a will and possibly a trust, discuss your healthcare wishes through an advanced directive (also called a living will) and healthcare power of attorney (giving a loved one the authority to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated), and finally include a durable power of attorney (so a loved one can handle finances and daily life while you are incapacitated). All this wrapped up in an easy to read, easy to store, and easy to review package.
Hiring a nanny seems straightforward; it's like paying a babysitter, but with more consistent hours, right? Actually, it's far more complex (says this tax attorney who found the whole situation convoluted and missed a reporting deadline or two.) Let me share lessons learned from my personal experience to make your process of hiring a nanny seamless. I'll explain what is required once you are a "household employer," register your household with necessary state agencies, obtain your employer identification number, and create a calendar for reporting deadlines. You'll know what you need to do, when to do it, and where to send it, ensuring you stay on top of all the paperwork.
